Extension Course "Sound Engineering in the Future" by Tsukasa Miyamoto               November 27, 2014

Inviting Mr. Tsukasa Miyamto, who has been engaged in sound engineering of various concerts since the dawn of PA in Japan and advocates "Sympho-camcanvas," the sound system that represents new sound space, as the lecturer, a lecture on sound engineering in the future was given.
In the lecture, various ganres of music was played by 2ch speakers and the multi-speaker sound system "Sympho-canvas" to compare the two systems. Furthermore, participants had a chance to walk around the space surrounded by 16 multi speakers placed in the room and experienced realistic feeling and atmosphere as if they are walking among orchestra players on stage. The lecture turned out to be a very valuable opportunity for the students who are studying sound engineering at the Sound Media Course.
As an extension course, the llecture was open to public.

Extension Course "Music Production and Recording in the Future" by Akira Fukada           October 30, 2014

Inviting Mr. Akira Fukada, a world class recording producer/engineer, as the lecturer, a lecture on what is going to be important in music production and recording in the future. Mr. Fukada also talked about some of his works while lisning to the works in a surround playing environment. Participants had a chance to compare listening to sound recorded in PCM, DSD, 96kHz, and 44.1kHz CD sound to actually feel the differences. The lecture turned out to be a very important opportunity for the students who are studying music production and recording at the Sound Media Course.
As an extension course, the lecture was open to public, and there were many participants.

Session recording of NUA Wind Orchestra                                September 23, 2014

Session recording of NUA Wind Orchestra for a new CD to be released through a Dutch label, De Haske, took place for 3 days from September 16. This recording production has been taking place annually as a collaboration project by De Haske and Nagoya University of Arts. This year, a recording team comprised of senior students and a faculty of the Sound Media Course recorded 8 wind works, played by NUA Wind Orchestra with Mr. Jan Van der Roost and Prof. Masaichi Takeuchi as conductors. It turned out to be a very important opportunity for the student who participated it.

Summer Surround Production Workshop                                 August 21, 2014

Surround Sound Design Workshop by Mr. Masao Sawaguchi took place as an intensive course for senior student of the Sound Media Course for 4 days from August 18 to August 21. In the workshop, each student was given his/her own role such as director, composer, sound engineer, and mixing engineer, each student and they committed sound design and surround mixing for around 3 minute long visual work. Starting from scratch, the students learned about expression methods using surround system through group work by discussing production planning, engaging in composition and foley recording, and working on mixing. An article on this workshop appeared in a magazine, Pro-Sound (Octover, 2014), with a title, "Surround TERAKOYA Lab 5.1 Surround Terakoya-juku Report."

Live recording of NUA concert, "The Evening of Concerti"                        July 17, 2014

A concert presented by Nagoya University of Arts, "The Evening of Concerti" was live-recorded as a part of the class, Recording Practicum, for senior students at Shirakawa Hall, Nagoya on July 17, 2014. After preliminary studies, the students engaged in recording of piano concerto and clarinet concerto. It turned out to be a valuable experience for the students who participated it.

"The 1st Seminar on Central Japan Network Audio Transmission Evaluation Experiment"        April 10, 2014

"The 1st Seminar on Central Japan Network Audio Transmission Evaluation Experiment" took place at the Large Ensemble Room, the 2nd Building, Nagoya University of Arts' East Campus at 3:00pm on Thursday, April 10.
The main topic of the experiment was on audio transmission by ethernet, coaxial cables, and optical fiber which has been widespreading rapidly in the fields of sound engineering, relaying, and recording. Specialists of stage sound engineering, audio broadcasting, and recording in the Central Japan region assembled together, and representatives from manufacturers gave presentations on formats, advantages and disadvantages of transmission specifications, including DANTE, DigitalSnake, RAVENNA, MADI, SoundGrid. In the second half of the seminar, a comparative experiment on sound quality and delay was conducted using the identical sound sources, and it turned out to be very productive siminar.
The seminar became possible with participation of the many people in the fields of broadcasting and stage sound engineering in the Central Japan region and cooperation by many manufacturers. We would like to thank all concerned people.

 Kaleidoscope 2014                                            February 27, 2014











"Kaleidoscope," an event presented in collaboration of the Sound Media Course and Art Management Course, School of Music, and the School of Design, took place at Mini Theater, Aichi Art Center on February 27. Sound Media Course took charge of composition, sound engineering, and recording. Considering the project as the summing-up of the music production we dayly work on and aiming to create an experimental sound space with the state-of-the-art technology, the course embarked on the project using all its sources.
For this year's Kaleidoscope, we invited an inernationally active German composer, Mr. Oliver Schneller, who presented his work for vibraphone and electronics and gave an open lecture on how he has produced his latest electronics work and ones he had produced in the past.
We finished all the events successfully, and we would like to thank those who participated it.

 Mr. Oliver Schneller

Mr. Oliver Schneller graduated from New England Conservatory in Boston and studied at Columbia University in New York where he studied with Tristan Murail and earned a doctral degree. He devoted himself to his study at IRCAM (Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique), France.
In addition to his works commissioned by IRCAM, German Radio, and ZKM, his works have been presented in various international music festivals and by ensembles all over the world, including MATA New York, Musica nova Helsinki, Takeo, and Darmstadt.
He has engaged in music production at ZKM Karlsruhe and College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati as artist in residence. Currently, he teaches at Hannover Conservatory of Music.

 Tonmeister Workshop 2013                                        December 1, 2013

Since 2007, the Sound Media Course has had Tonmeister Workshop. Inviting Dipl.-Tonmeister Eberhard Hinz as a lecturer and Dipl.-Tonmeister Aki Matusch as a translator, we had the 4th workshop on session recording of woodwind quintet at Emerald Hall in the City of Hekinan, Aichi.
The workshop was presented not only for students and staffs at Nagoya University of Arts but also for public as an extensive course, and many professionals, including members of Audio Engineering Society Japan Section, from Tokyo and Osaka area also participated the workshop. In the workshop, students could actually listen to, watch, and feel how a Tonmeister solves all the problems in recording using musical techniques or using technologies, and they had a very valuable time. A report on this workshop , "Seminar Report of Nagoya University of Arts' Tonemeister Workshop 2013" appeared in a magazine, Pro Sound (April, 2014).

 Lecture/Concert, "6 Centuries in Music, Told by Guitar" by Norio Sato             October 10, 2013

Inviting Mr. Norio Sato, Lecture/COncert, "6 Centuries in Music, Told by Guitar," took place at the Large Ensemble Room, the 2nd Building, Nagoya University of Arts East Campus at 6:00pm on Thursday, October 10.
Mr. Norio Sato, an active guitarist and conductor and a founder of Ensemble Nomado (a group of modern and classical music performers) gave a lecture on music history from 6 centuries ago to today by presenting works composed in each period.
In the second half of the lecture/concert, Mr. Sato also performed works by Mr. Noriyasu Tanaka and Ms. Miyuki Ito, faculties of Nagoya University of Arts

It was a valuable opportunity for the students to be able to learn the flow of ages in 6 centuries of music. The lecture/concert was open to the public and many people participated it.

 Live Recording of the NUA Wind Orchestra                                September 24, 2013

As a recording practicum for the class "Studio Operating Practicum II" for senior students of the Sound Media Course, live recording of the Nagoya University of Arts Wind Orchestra took place at the Concert Hall, Aichi Art Center on Tuesday, September 24. Microphones were arranged to be able to mix both in stereo sound and surround sound. Through the recording practicum, students learned dificulties of recording in a hall, and it was a good opportunity for them to consider how to capture the sound echoing in the hall.

 "Sakanaction Visual & Talk Session" by Mr. Ichiro Yamaguchi, Sakanaction                August 19, 2013

 
 

"Sakanaction Visual & Talk Session" took place at the Music Auditrium, Nagoya University of Arts East Campus on Monday, August 19, 2013. In the session, a lecture on bakground stories in producing Sakanaction's 6th album CD, "Sakanaction," details of their tour exemplifying the album, process of their music production, and how their live performances are accomplished through a talk by Mr. Ichiro Yamaguchi, Sakanaction and Mr. Shoichi Horii, a part-time lecturer at NUA.
After the lecture, there was a questions and answers session, and it became a valuable opportunity for the students.
The event was open to public, and 100 NUA students and 300 visitors participated it.

 Extension Course "Composition Techniques for Electro-acoustic Music" by Mr. Rodrigo Sigal         May 14, 2013

Inviting an internationally active composer, Mr. Rodrigo Sigal, Extension Course "Composition Techniques for Electro-acoustic Music" took place at the Middle Ensemble Room, the 2nd Building on Nagoya University of Arts East Campus on Tuesday, May 14, 2013.
In the lecture, Mr. Sigal talked about concepts of his own works, what kinds of technologies he has utilized, and the relation between those technologies and arts.
Mr. Sigal earned doctral degrees in composition and electronic music at the City University, Londo and currently serves as Director of CMMAS(Centro Mexicano para la Musica y las Artes Sonoras) and the Art Director of the Visiones Sonoras Music Festival.
The lecture turned out to be valuable opportunity for the students.
It was open to public as an extension course, and many people participated it.
